The 2025 Design Contest ended on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. |
On Saturday, February 3, 2024 the Board of Directors reviewed 75
entries in an all-day meeting to narrow them down to 8 finalists. |
|
|
On Thursday, February 8, 2024 the paid membership of the Burbank
Tournament of Roses Association got together to review the 8 finalist
entries. |
Through a series of votes, the membership ranked the entries from 1
to 8. |
|
|
The membership chose this as their number one pick
with the working title of “Prehistoric Fun”.
"PREHISTORIC FUN", is a whimsical tribute to the fun-loving youthful
spirit in all of us, represented by a host of the world's most popular
dinosaurs - all at their peak of child-like cuteness.
The float depicts over a dozen cute and colorful creatures discovering
the world around them as they entertain each other in their beautiful
tropical environment. Even though the dinosaurs are each different they
are able to play together like one big happy family and are having the
best day ever. Except for the T. Rex at the back of the float. Rexie is
having a time-out for biting. |
This design was submitted as our number
one pick at the Pasadena
Tournament of Rose's Theme Draft meeting held on Wednesday, February
14, 2024 |
On March 1, 2024 we received confirmation that our number one pick
has been accepted. |
Our Design Contest winner is Erik C. Andersen
from Toluca Lake, California. This is Erik's third time designing
a float for Burbank. His previous designs include 1991's "The Great
Race" and 1989's "The Unforgettable Picnic". |
34 years ago, Erik C. Andersen submitted two floats to the Burbank
Tournament of Roses Association for
the 1991 Rose Parade with the theme “Fun 'n' Games”. His dinosaur float
"Prehistoric Fun" lost to his other creation, “The Great Race”. |

On February 24, 2024 the Design Committee got to work with a
brainstorming session to see what changes we might want to make |
The members discussed all aspects of the design covering characters,
scenic background, special effects, animation possibilities, etc. |
|
|
The Design Committee met a couple of weeks later to review the list
and narrow down the possibilities. |
|
|
Now that the brainstorming session is over, it's time to
start putting together those suggestions into a drawing. Above are
two versions for the Design Committee to review and revise. These
drawings were release on March 27, 2024 |
|
|
On April 4, 2024 the Design Committee met to fine tune
the placement of the dinosaurs, above are a couple of variations. |
|
For the April Deco kick-off meeting this drawing was released.
The major characters are in place, but more details still need to be
added to the drawing. |
|
Just in time for the Self Built Get Together this final
black and white line drawing was released and will be used to pick the
colors for the color rendering. In addition the Construction crew
is using this drawing to create scale drawings and prepare to start
building the float. This drawing was release on April 19, 2024. |
At the May 16, 2024 General Meeting the membership
reviewed and voted on 86 submitted float titles. Through a series
of votes, one title came out as the clear winner, the new float title
is: "Having A-Lava Fun". This replaces the
previous working title of "Prehistoric Fun". |
|
On Tuesday, June 11, 2024 the final black and white
line drawing was released...now on to creating the color rendering. |
On Thursday, July 11, 2024, the Board of Directors voted
to make the point that we are having “A-Lava” fun this year so they
added a point, an exclamation point to be exact to the float title,
which is now “Having A-Lava Fun!” |
|
On Friday, August 2, 2024 the final color rendering
was released. |
